자작의 가사에 곡을 붙인 것으로
1860년에 작곡,
1861년에 출판되었다. 포스터의 아내 제인의 친정에 살았던
늙은 흑인 노예 조와의 약속에 의해 만들어졌다고
한다.
“젊고 즐거웠던 시절은 다 지나가고 친구들도
이제 모두 저 세상으로
떠나버렸네. 그들이 다정하게 부르는 소리가 들려온다”라는
내용의 애절한 노래로서 지금도 전세계적으로
애창되고 있다.
